AHLAM CONCERT

During the pandemic, Ahlam أحلام , whose name translates to ‘Dreams’, was killed in an honour killing in Amman, Jordan, sparking region-wide protests. Meanwhile, there was a rise in efforts to end gender based violence across the globe. Through song, physical theatre, and other arts, this concert threads Ahlam’s story with others’ from different cultures, to explore individual and collective dreamings of women, juxtaposed with our society's constructs of womanhood. Based on the Palestinian folk song “Ahwaji” about a coffeeshop. Through workshops, women of different Arab regions shared the cultural significance and traditions of coffee in their specific region. The project included paintings with coffee grounds, embroidered coasters, learning the Palestinian folk song.
Workshops culminated in the creation of a music video layering the folk song + ASL poetry, participants’ visual and textile arts, and recordings of the participants’ coffee storytelling. Natalie also created of an interactive make-your-own-poem arts installation based on participant’s stories

A multicultural community music program in Oakville connecting newcomers and long-standing residents of all ages.
A series of gatherings per year designed to create a more welcoming and pluralistic neighbourhoods for newcomers and refugees in Oakville. During the gatherings, participants learned songs of many cultures, learned from guest musicians, built relationships, and ESL learners practiced English through music. Gatherings culminated in innovative concert celebrations for the community, programmed by the co-Directors.
